Lesson 4: Definite Articles and Intonation

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Correctly use definite and indefinite articles in French.
  • Recognize and apply rising and falling intonation in speech.
  • Form simple sentences and questions using proper intonation.

Duration: 1 hour

  1. Definite and Indefinite Articles (20 minutes)
    • Read and review the rules on the indefinite article (page 26).
    • Complete the exercises:
      • Fill in with “un” or “une” (page 26, exercise 1).
      • Underline the correct article in the sentences (page 26, exercise 2).
      • Write the words in the plural (page 26, exercise 6).
  2. Understanding Rising and Falling Intonation (15 minutes)
    • Study the section on questions without an interrogative word (page 28).
    • Listen to the sentences and determine whether the intonation is rising or falling (page 28, exercise 9).
    • Complete the sentences with “?” or “.” according to the intonation (page 28, exercise 10).
  3. Practice (15 minutes)
    • Complete the dialogues using “?” or “.” (page 29, exercise 12).
    • Rearrange the sentences to form logical dialogues (page 29, exercise 13).
  4. Review (10 minutes)
    • Reread the dialogue examples (page 30, intercultural section).
    • Take a quiz.
